The decision for the Waiuku Waste Water Treatment Plant resource consents is close. (MHRS has appealed the panel decision to the Environmental Court)
After deliberating for considerable time, the hearing panel's decision is positive for Watercare Services, although there has been considerable thought given to conditions which should be attached to the consent.
Algal blooms, monitoring and remediation are the primary points of concern. Unfortunately with the South-West Manukau Harbour channel being isolated from the Auckland Council, reporting algal content in the water is likely to fall largely to residents, professional fishermen and recreational water users. Currently there has been so few blooms reported in the past that there is little information with which to move forward.
Although the reporting mechanism is not user friendly, please persevere to assist in the continual improvement of our waterways.
